Vista problem
I just had a problem with Windows Vista and an older Wireless LAN Router (Siemens). Several other people seem to have this problem too (the driver just disconnects), especially annoying if you’re traveling and you depend on the hotel’s wlan. Fortunately it was not my notebook but now I’m even more confident that I won’t buy another computer with an OS from Microsoft – Apple, I’m coming!
Apple’s advantage with this kind of things is that they make both the hardware and the software, MSFT doesn’t do that, which is why you see a myriad of (great) peripherals for Windows and only a couple of things for Macs.
I partially agree with you, but it’s about a wlan access point, there are standards for those kind of things and it’s definitely an os problem.
First of all, great to have you back in the blogosphere!
Didn’t you want to move to Mac OS in autumn? Why try to switch to Vista in the meantime?! (Admitted, I want to try it myself, just to get an accurate comparsion between the Apple and MS software flagships).
I agree that there are standards for this kind of thing, but walk with me here for a second.
I use WLAN exclusively on my Tablet, I barely ever connect it to a wired uplink and my WLAN never craps out and always works. No matter if I connect to a Siemens router, Linksys router or FON router (which I love), they all just work.
So my guess is that it’s a custom driver that isn’t working. For me, the VI wifi driver has always worked, even in the betas from a year ago.
@Benedikt:
No, I didn’t switch, it’s about the new notebook of a friend. We will get some Vista PCs in autumn in college, I’ll give them a wide berth.
@Kerim:
What kind of chip do you have? I’m having problems with Intel’s 3945abg. I doubt that Intel is the source of the problem.
I’ve got the 2915ABG.
