I’ve just purchased Radiohead’s new album “In Rainbows” (no, I didn’t order the discbox, just the download) and I’m currently listening to it. Ordering was nearly as easy as purchasing music from the iTunes Store which is definitely a plus. After registering an account (no activation email) and entering your credit card infos you get the link to some zip file which contains the songs as mp3 files (160 kbps, some people are complaining about the quality, I don’t. It’s okay for me for the price I’ve paid).

I did it only halfway through the album by now but from what I can say now it’s great. Their sound is quite different compared to the last few albums, I would classify it among OK Computer and Amnesiac. If you wanna have a better sound quality, wait for the discbox or till the album is in stores by next year. And if you’re looking for some cover artwork, see John Hick’s thread and the comments.

Don’t get me wrong, I really love iTunes and the iTunes Store but thinking about prices… I’ve just paid 12 Euros for an album, if I would buy it via Amazon it would cost me 11 Euros and some waiting for the parcel to arrive. But I would get a real CD and a booklet, so more value for my money.

According to this article on CNET Apple has the same price scheme for every country, 0.99 Euros/US-Dollars/Canadian Dollars. I pay $ 1.31 for a song, a Canadian pays 83 Cents - that isn’t really fair, is it? I would really like to know how Apple justifies these differences. Maybe they need to save some money for their lawyers’ costs.

Happy new year, by the way!

…Because the love song is never simply happy. It must first embrace the potential for pain. Those songs that speak of love without having within their lines an ache or a sigh are not love songs at all but rather hate songs disguised as love songs, and they are not to be trusted. These songs deny us our humanness and our God-given right to be sad and the air-waves are littered with them. The love song must resonate with the whispers of sorrow, the echoes of grief. The writer who refuses to explore the darker regions of the heart will never be able to write convincingly about the wonder, the magic and the joy of love, for just as goodness cannot be trusted unless it has breathed the same air as evil – the enduring metaphor of Christ crucified between two criminals comes to mind here – so within the fabric of the love song, within its melody, its lyric, one must sense an acknowledgement of its capacity for suffering.

I went out yesterday to get the very last Christmas present (if I were chancellor of Austria, I would adopt an anti-commerce law for Christmas). It’s the same every year, people are running around everywhere, buying gifts, carrying large shopping bags and all that.

But my day was saved when I found the new Cardigans album Super Extra Gravity. I heard their single I need some fine wine and you, you need to be nicer before and I really love it, but the album… It’s just awesome, really a masterpiece in my eyes. So powerful and everything.

Perhaps I will still go to Sweden for my exchange semester, swedish band’s seem to be quite hot at the moment :-)

…um sie zu mögen. Dabei ist nicht die Rede von den beiden Herren zu meiner Rechten (zumindest deren Abbildungen), sondern von den Alben.

Jamie Cullum kennt wohl jeder (den andern hoffentlich auch, ein gewisser Paul McCartney, ehemaliger Pilzkopf) und vielleicht habt ihr ja auch schon seine neuen Songs gehört. Ich muss ehrlich sagen, dass ich von der neuen CD nicht ganz so begeistert bin, wie zum Beispiel von Twentysomething, weil einfach die großen Lieder fehlen. Aber manchmal, Catch The Sun mal hergenommen, kommt wirklich gute Stimmung auf. Nämlich beim Refrain, dafür gibt’s zwei Daumen. Oder für Photograph, welches ich zuvor schon mal live gehört habe.
Alles in allem gut, vielleicht ungewohnt, weil Jamie diesmal den größten Teil der Lieder selbst geschrieben hat und man jetzt nicht nur seine Stimme und seinen Enthusiasmus hört, sondern weil einfach Catching Tales Mr. Cullum ist.

Und nun zu einem alten Hasen, Sir Paul McCartney. Seine erste CD, die den Weg zu mir fand war Driving Rain, meiner Meinung nach ein echtes Meisterwerk (welches bei manchen (!) Kritikern ja nicht unbedingt gut angekommen ist). Chaos And Creation In The Backyard ist vielleicht noch ein bisschen anders.
Ich muss gleich vorweg sagen, ich kenne nicht viele McCartney Songs, aber was mich fasziniert ist die Komplettheit des Albums. Da gibt’s keine Ecken und Kanten (zumindestens nach dem zweiten Mal hören), da gibt’s einfach nur Musik. Und das mit 63 Jahren. Gut, die Rolling Stones können das auch noch, die wirken dabei dann allerdings doch nicht mehr so frisch.

Und für alle, die sie noch nicht kennen, hier eine kurze Einführung: Bloc Party sind eine Londoner Band, die ziemlich rockig klingt, aber auch ein paar elektronische Einschläge hat. Wer sie sich mal unverbindlich anhören will, schaut mal auf ihrer Download-Page vorbei, dort gibt’s drei kostenlose Samples.

Bin vor circa zwei Wochen durch puren Zufall auf Audioscrobbler gestoßen. Hatte allerdings leider nicht viel Zeit, mir die Seite genauer anzusehen, da sie in den Umbau ging.

Nun ist sie aber, mit neuem Namen Last.fm wieder da und meiner Meinung nach wirklich gut gelungen. Was macht Last.fm/Audioscrobbler eigentlich genau? Am einfachsten gesagt, es analysiert Musik Profile. Ich höre zB gerne Radiohead, eine Suche danach liefert mir andere Bands wie Coldplay, die Beatles (die zwei dürften wohl alle kennen), aber auch unbekanntere Bands wie etwas Wilco oder Elliott Smith. So kann man sich durch’s Netzwerk hanteln und neue Bands finden. Natürlich gibt es wieder Tags, Sortierungen nach Ländern, es gibt Gruppen,…

Wenn man mal unter die Haube sieht, trifft man wieder unseren alten Bekannten, AJAX und ein paar nette Stylesheets, die eine gute Inspiration für eigene Projekte sind.

Was mir jetzt noch irgendwie fehlt ist der große Über-Dienst, der die gesamte bisherige Social Software vereinigt. Mittels Flickr Konzertbilder hochladen, dazu gleich auf 43 Things einen Task definieren, auf Last.fm nach einer ähnlichen Band suchen und auf BlinkList Interviews bookmarken.

Eines gleich vorweg: Ich kenne keinen Musiker, der rein aus seinem Klavier eine One-Man-Show machen kann. Ohne die Tasten zu benützen - versteht sich. Jamie Cullum schafft das. So ein Konzertflügel hat schließlich noch Saiten, einen Rahmen und nicht zuletzt einen Deckel. Und damit kann man, mit Hilfe von einem Recorder, wunderbare Musik machen. Funktioniert dann so, dass man nacheinander verschiedene Instrumente einspielt und man so am Ende glaubt, eine gesamte Band spiele vor einem.

Jamie beherrscht aber nicht nur das Spiel auf dem Klavier perfekt. Er kann wunderschöne Balladen (”Lover, You Should Have Come Over”) singen, oder richtig abrocken (”High And Dry”). Schlagfertig ist er ebenso (”I love you!” - “Thank you, mum!”) wie hübsch - habe ich mir von weiblichem Publikum sagen lassen.

Falls ihr mal nach Wien kommen solltet und eigentlich nicht auf Jazz steht: Nur weil wo Jazzfest draufsteht, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass da nur Jazz drinnen ist. Manche Teile des Konzerts erinnerten mich an die Red Hot Chili Peppers (”High And Dry”), manche hingegen waren wieder etwas punkiger. Was hier auch nicht unerwähnt bleiben sollte, ist Jamie’s Solo auf der Akustik Gitarre (”Liar”).

Was noch auffiel war das bunt gemischte Publikum: junge Leute, ältere Ehepaare, Leute mir Sportschuhen und Outdoorjacken, Männer in Anzügen und Frauen in Abendkleidern. Ein 23 jähriger, der das Jazzpublikum für sich gewonnen hat.

Alternative Sichtweisen

Es gibt aber auch Menschen, die so ein fantastisches Konzert völlig anders erleben: Sturz betrunken: Hätte man das anfängliche “Jamie, ich will ein Kind von dir!” vielleicht sogar bis auf die Bühne gehört, führte der letzte Versuch nach gut 1 1/2 Stunden nur noch zu leisem Gelächter der umstehenden Personen.
